When you arrange for shipping, make it so the recipient has to sign for the item received. If the buyer doesn't have to sign for the item, and they decide to dispute the charge with their bank or credit card, you wont have proof of shipment. Making the recipient sign for their items helps your credit card processor fight fraudulent charge backs. If you must use PayPal, which isn't recommended, make sure you've complied with all of their seller protection requisites.

If possible, avoid selling to buyers who are new to auction sites; typically, scammers make a different account everyday, and often times the account they're using is less than a week old. Try only selling to buyers who have some positive feedback from other sellers. Feedback is a very important thing to consider before engaging in any deal with an auction site member. This goes for both, sellers and buyers.

If you can, avoid auction sites that don't require a credit card for you to register. Auctions that don't require sensitive information to register often have lax policies that lead to an unsafe marketplace. All auctions sites have scammers, but the ones with quick and easy registration are usually full of them.

When listing an item, include contact instructions that will make it easier for you to spot trouble. Scammers rarely read through auction details, as they don't plan on losing any of their own money. Putting instructions on specific ways to contact you with questions helps make it easier to distinguish real buyers from scam artists. An example would be, asking buyers to put a specific title (that you would specifiy) on their email, and letting them know that any inquiries that don't include what you ask for will be ignored.

Finally, don't compromise your own rules. If you specifiy that only certain forms of payment will be accepted, keep to your word - don't make exceptions. Same goes for shipping destination; don't ship somewhere that would go against what you outlined within your auction.
